Abstract

Alsendia, Ibtisam Fairusy, 2025. The Analysis of Politeness Strategies and Translation Technique in the Dialogues of Wicked (2024) Movie. Bachelor Thesis of Department of English Education, Faculty of Education, Widya Gama Mahakam University. This research was guided by Dr. Arbain, M.Pd., as the first supervisor and Widi Syahtia Pane, M.Pd., as the second supervisor. This study investigates the types of politeness strategies and translation techniques found in the dialogues of Wicked (2024) movie and its Indonesian subtitles. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis, the research is based on Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory of politeness strategies and Molina and Albir’s (2002) classification of translation techniques. The data were collected from selected scenes in the film containing politeness markers, both in the original English dialogues and their translated Indonesian subtitles. The findings reveal that various politeness strategies such as bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record are used by the characters to reflect social roles and relationships. The translation of these strategies employs techniques like literal translation, reduction, modulation, and adaptation. However, some politeness nuances are reduced or altered due to time, space, and cultural constraints in subtitling. This study emphasizes the importance of pragmatic awareness in audiovisual translation and highlights how subtitling choices influence cross-cultural communication. Keywords: Politeness Strategy, Translation Technique, Wicked 2024, Subtitle, Pragmatics.
