Abstract
Kusmita Herti, 2026. Improving the Beginning Reading Ability of Second Grade Students of SDN 001 Sebulu Through the Use of Picture Card Media in the 2025/2026 Academic Year. Advisor I: Dr. Nur Agus Salim, S.Pd., M.Pd.; Advisor II: Samsul Adianto, S.Pd., M.Pd. Keywords: beginning reading, picture card media, learning outcomes, classroom action research. This study aims to improve the beginning reading ability of second grade students of SDN 001 Sebulu through the use of picture card media. This research is a Classroom Action Research conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this study were 26 second grade students of SDN 001 Sebulu. Data were collected through observation of teacher and student activities and tests of students’ beginning reading ability. The data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative analysis.The results showed that the use of picture card media could improve students’ beginning reading ability. This can be seen from the increase in the average score of students’ reading ability in each cycle. In the initial condition, the students’ average score was still low. After the implementation of the action in Cycle I, the average score increased to 68 with 13 students (52%) achieving mastery learning. In Cycle II, the average score increased to 76 with 23 students (88%) achieving mastery learning.The improvement indicates that picture card media has advantages in helping students recognize words through visual images, making it easier for them to understand the relationship between pictures and words. In addition, this media can increase students’ interest, motivation, and participation in the learning process.Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the use of picture card media is effective in improving the beginning reading ability of second grade students of SDN 001 Sebulu.
