Abstract

This study aimed to examine whether there is a significant effect of using TikTok short videos on students’ vocabulary achievement at SMK Kesehatan Samarinda. It examined whether short-form audiovisual content could improve students’ vocabulary achievement compared to conventional teaching methods. This research employed a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design. The population consisted of tenth-grade students, and the sample was selected using purposive sampling, involving 29 students in the experimental group and 23 students in the control group. The instrument was a multiple-choice vocabulary test administered as pre-test and post-test. Its validity was established through content and construct validity, and reliability was measured using Cronbach’s Alpha. The data were initially analyzed using an independent samples t-test; however, since the data did not meet the normality assumption, the Mann–Whitney U test was used as an alternative. The findings indicate that there is a significant difference in students’ vocabulary achievement between those taught using TikTok short videos and those taught using conventional methods. Students in the experimental group demonstrated higher vocabulary achievement after the treatment compared to the control group. Therefore, the use of TikTok short videos can be considered an effective instructional medium for improving students’ vocabulary achievement.
